6-Day Rongai Route Trek – Kilimanjaro Climb

The 6-Day Rongai Route is one of the quietest and most scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching the mountain from the northern side near the Kenyan border.

Anchor 1

Day 1

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Drive to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border

Complete registration and park formalities

Begin trekking through farmland and rainforest trails

Enjoy peaceful surroundings with chances to spot monkeys and birdlife

Continue ascending gradually through forest and moorland vegetation

Arrive at Simba Camp for dinner and overnight


Altitude: 1,950m to 2,625m

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Simba Camp

Day 2

Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

After breakfast, continue trekking through open moorland with spectacular views of Kibo Peak

The trail becomes less steep and more scenic as altitude increases

Stop for lunch along the trail while enjoying panoramic mountain views

Arrive at Second Cave Camp in the afternoon

Optional acclimatization walk around the camp area


Altitude: 2,625m to 3,450m

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Second Cave Camp

Day 3

Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Continue ascending through moorland and rocky landscapes

Enjoy beautiful views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding wilderness

The route becomes steeper as you approach Kikelewa Camp

Arrive at camp in the afternoon for rest and acclimatization

Dinner and overnight at Kikelewa Camp


Altitude: 3,450m to 3,600m

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp


Day 4

Kikelewa Camp to Kibo Hut

Trek through alpine desert terrain toward Kibo Hut

Cross the Saddle Desert between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks

Enjoy dramatic mountain scenery and panoramic views

Arrive at Kibo Hut, the final base camp before summit attempt

Early dinner and rest before the midnight summit climb


Altitude: 3,600m to 4,700m

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Kibo Hut

Day 5

Summit Day & Descent to Horombo Hut

Wake up around midnight for the summit attempt

Begin the challenging ascent toward Gilman’s Point and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)

Reach the summit at sunrise and enjoy breathtaking glacier and mountain views

Celebrate your achievement at the Roof of Africa

Descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal

Continue descending to Horombo Hut for overnight stay


Altitude: 4,700m to 5,895m to 3,720m

Hiking Time: 10–14 Hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Day 6

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, continue descending through moorland and rainforest zones

Enjoy the final views of the mountain and surrounding forest

Arrive at Marangu Gate and receive your summit certificates

Transfer back to Arusha or Moshi


Altitude: 3,720m to 1,870m

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

To reserve the trip, we require 50 % down payment by bank transfer or credit card. The 2nd payment of 50 % has to be paid 3 months before the start of the trip.

 

Bank Transfer costs have to be covered by the payee. 3% credit card processing fee will apply to all card payments.
